Muuna Cottage Cheese Product Review

About the Product

Muuna® aims to change the way consumers think about cottage cheese. Muuna single-serve cups are available in six varieties, including strawberry, blueberry, pineapple, peach, mango and low-fat plain. The makers of Muuna created a proprietary recipe self-described as irresistibly craveable, melt-in-your-mouth, creamy cottage cheese paired with premium, real pieces of fruit.

Muuna's fruit-on-the-bottom flavors each have 130 calories, 9-11 g sugar, and 15 g protein per 5.3 oz container, while its similar-sized low-fat plain has 120 calories, 4 g sugar and 19 g protein. All products are free of high-fructose corn syrup or stevia and are free of artificial flavors, colors, and sweeteners. In addition, they are gluten free and certified kosher.

Dietitian’s Review Cottage cheese itself dates back to the early 1800s. Through the mid-to-late 1900s, cottage cheese earned its reputation as a diet food that some describe as boring and bland. In the 2000s, the dairy case exploded with innovations centered on yogurt, Greek yogurt, kefir-style probiotic drinks, and more. All the while, cottage cheese remained somewhat stagnant at a $1.1 billion category, compared to the booming $8 billion yogurt category. However, the tide may be starting to change. Consumer interest in convenient, rich sources of protein has been growing, and Muuna cottage cheese really delivers. Each portable 5.3 oz cup supplies 15 g protein in its fruit flavor varieties and 19 g per serving in its low-fat plain variety.

My personal favorite is the mango, although I can say I enjoyed eating all Muuna varieties sampled. While each fruited mixture lacks the stunning visual appeal presented on the outside of the container, the appearance didn't negatively impact my overall experience. I found each one to be a satisfying and tasty snack option that is more convenient and portable than adding fresh-cut fruit to traditional bulk plain cottage cheese products.

Muuna cottage cheese retails for $1.69 for single-serve cups and $3.49 for its 16 oz multi-serve containers. For more information, visit Munna.com.
